Reclaiming the Material World:
Reappropriating Objects from the Insignificant to the Monumental
In the fall of 2020, a group of creative high school students joined artist Alicia Piller, for a weekly online workshop exploring sculptural design and material connections from the past to the present. Students utilized a variety of mixed media materials (natural & human-made), including clay, fiber, paper, metal, wood, and found objects. They strengthen their ability to see sculpture in the every day and experiment with structural form while considering society at large. The session included facilitated discussions about art, virtual artist studio and gallery visits, portfolio development, professional photography of artworks, website/online presence consulting, and an art supply kit with all materials and tools needed for the class.
