Craft Youth Culture is a free arts after-school program designed for teens who are interested pursuing careers in the arts.
This fall, participating teens will join artist Patrick Michael Ballard for a weekly online workshop that will bring together a diverse range of materials and traditions of storytelling to reveal new and surprising ways to express ourselves as we sculpt, sing, thread, puppet, spit, screech, and choreograph our own personal cosmology. Students will challenge their expectations of identity, fertilize their dreams, and spin their making process deeper into a rich material storytelling practice.
The program includes:
Gallery visits and facilitated discussions about art
Working with contemporary artists and artist studio visits
Hands-on artmaking projects and portfolio development
Guest speakers and programs exploring careers in the arts
First-hand experience of the behind-the-scenes operations of an art museum
All necessary materials and tools for projects
Free admission to the museum, special events for you and your family
A culminating professional showcase of work created throughout the year in the form
of an exhibition, event, or catalogue
Check out the Teens' work from 2020!
Craft Contemporary requires proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 from each participating teen before attending class at the museum.
A picture of the teen's vaccination card must be emailed to the Education Manager by January 10, 2022. Masks will still be required to participate in the program.
We will be closely monitoring COVID-19 cases and information. Please see our visit page for more information on the COVID-19 protocols at the museum.
About the Artist
Patrick Michael Ballard is a cross-disciplinary storyteller utilizing material practice, theater, song, and collaborative game-making to expand and challenge conventions of fantasy, domesticated thought, and how we construct the idea of a “self”. Bringing together seemingly disparate crafts of puppet-making, quilting, felting, soft and hard foam sculpture, backyard metal casting, practical FX, miniature stage-design, improvisatory music, whimsical yet highly semantical list making, and noise, Patrick utilizes spoken-word threads to weave uncanny situations and spaces, revealing the many worlds of meaning and melding within the carnivalesque and mundane.
