In conjunction with our current exhibition Pouya Afshar: The Charm of the Unfamiliar, we invite you to join us for a conversation introducing representatives of three major immigrants’ rights organizations: Human Rights First, KIND (Kids in Need of Defense), and Equity First. Learn about current issues and how these organizations are assisting displaced communities. Speakers: Amitesh Parikh, Senior Staff Attorney Immigration Equality; Javier Garcia, Staff Attorney Kids in Need of Defense (KIND); and Jenna Gilbert Director, Refugee Representation Human Rights First. 

Participating organizations:

Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) is the preeminent U.S.-based nongovernmental organization devoted to the protection of unaccompanied and separated children. KIND envisions a world in which every unaccompanied child on the move has access to legal counsel and has their rights and well-being protected as they migrate alone in search of safety. 

Immigration Equality is the nation’s leading LGBTQ and HIV-positive immigrant rights organization. Through direct legal services, policy advocacy, and impact litigation, Immigration Equality advocates for immigrants and families facing discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, or HIV status. 

Human Rights First is an independent advocacy and action organization that challenges America to live up to its ideals. We believe American leadership is essential in the global struggle for human rights, so we press the U.S. government and private companies to respect human rights and the rule of law. When they fail, we step in to demand reform, accountability, and justice. Around the world, we work where we can best harness American influence to secure core freedoms.
