Maker Night: Prickly Paint with Joseph A. Baca and Fé Gutierrez
Thursday, July 2, 2026 6:00pm - 8:00pm $12 public / members free
Do you yearn for a more sustainable and organic painting practice or just love learning about new ways of using natural materials to make art? Join us and learn how to craft your own paint using baba de nopal, cactus mucilage, and organic powder pigments in this hands-on workshop led by our Exhibitions Residency Manager Joseph Baca and Exhibitions Preparator Fé Jones Gutierrez.
Participants will learn how to extract the cactus mucilage and transform it into vibrant, usable paints inspired by the earth-toned palette of our current exhibition tierra. The paint-making process featured in this workshop was used to create the gallery wall colors for tierra, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the museum’s sustainable exhibition practices and commitment to reducing its environmental impact.
